Week 13: Carpet Installation

There are three main types of carpet installation.  There is glue down, cut to fit, and stretch in methods.  The glue down installations have two different methods: direct glue down and double glue down.  Direct glue down method is when the carpet is glued straight down to the floor.  The floor has to be smooth because the carpet will show and cracks or bumps.  This method is popular in most commercial settings because it is sustainable with not much movement with heavy traffic flow.  Double glue down is used when there is a pad under the carpet.  The pad has to be glued down and then the carpet is glued onto the pad.  The pad needs to have more density in order for this method to be durable.  With the carpet pad, the carpet will be be more comfortable and provide more insulation to the room.  The biggest reason this method isn't used as much is because it is much more expensive.

The second method is the stretch method.  The carpet is stretched across the whole room.  This is the most common method used in residential homes.  Tackless strips are glued onto the floor with nails aimed towards the wall.  The carpet starts from the middle where it has been fastened down and then they stretch the carpet over to the tackless strips.  It is quick and easy to install, and just as easy to remove.

The last installation method is when the carpet is cut to fit the room.  The carpet fits the room exactly, but it just lays over the floor unattached to anything.  This method is mainly used when he carpet is not meant to be permanent.  In example, if it is used for an outdoor area and it could have access to water, then the carpet can be removed and cleaned.  Because it is not permanent, movement of the carpet is inevitable with shifting and ripples.

Some ways to keep carpets and rugs clean can be from preventive maintenance.  There are protective mats so that dirt from shoes can be left on the mat, regular vacuuming, and minimizing and removing stains.  Those are some basic ways of cleaning.  More intense cleaning methods are dry extraction, dry foam, wet shampooing, and hot water extraction.  These methods are deep cleaning methods that can get all of the dirt, but also at a risk off destroying the appearance of the carpet.  Keeping your carpet clean can help it last longer and save you money.
